The Rich Fauna of Patagonia

Patagonia is home to unique biodiversity, with species you won't find anywhere else in the world. Here we tell you where and how to observe them.

Guanacos

The most emblematic camelid of Patagonia. Related to the llama, these elegant animals are easy to spot.

Where to see them:

  • Torres del Paine: Highest concentration of guanacos
  • Tierra del Fuego: Numerous herds
  • Patagonian steppe: Along the routes

Best time: Year-round

Tips:

  • They're curious animals but keep your distance
  • Best observation at dawn or dusk
  • Don't feed them

Penguins

Three penguin species inhabit the region: Magellanic (most common), King, and Rockhopper.

Where to see them:

  • Otway Sound: Magellanic penguin colony (65 km from Punta Arenas)
  • Magdalena Island: Largest colony in the region (boat excursion)
  • King Penguin Park: Only King penguin colony in Chile (Tierra del Fuego)

Best time: October to March

Tips:

  • Keep at least 1 meter distance
  • Don't use flash photography
  • Arrive early to avoid crowds

Condors

The largest flying bird in the world. Watching it soar over the Andes is magical.

Where to see them:

  • Torres del Paine: Condor Viewpoint
  • Cerro Dorotea (Puerto Natales)
  • French Valley (Torres del Paine)

Best time: Year-round, better in summer

Tips:

  • Look for thermal currents (midday)
  • Bring binoculars
  • Patience, they may take time to appear

Foxes

The culpeo fox and chilla fox are common in Patagonia.

Where to see them:

  • Torres del Paine: Very habituated to humans
  • Any rural area

Tips:

  • Don't feed them! It's illegal and dangerous
  • They're curious but can bite
  • Store food safely at campsites

Pumas

The largest feline in Chile. Difficult to see but present throughout Patagonia.

Where to see them:

  • Torres del Paine: Highest puma concentration in the world
  • Specialized tracking tours

Best time: Winter (more visible)

Tips:

  • Hire a specialized guide
  • Never approach one
  • They're most active at dawn and dusk

Whales and Dolphins

The Strait of Magellan is home to several cetacean species.

Where to see them:

  • Strait of Magellan: Tours from Punta Arenas
  • Beagle Channel: Excursions from Ushuaia

Best time: December to April

Common species:

  • Peale's dolphin
  • Humpback whale
  • Orca (occasional)

Sea Birds

Notable species:

  • Albatross: Colony on Albatross Island
  • Cormorants: Throughout the coast
  • Skuas: Torres del Paine
  • Flamingos: Steppe lagoons

General Tips

  1. Respect distance: Minimum 2 meters for land animals
  2. Don't feed: It's illegal and harms animals
  3. Silence: Don't make loud noises
  4. Trash: Leave nothing, animals can ingest it
  5. Local guides: Increase your sighting chances

Wildlife Photography

  • Use telephoto lens (200mm minimum)
  • High shutter speed (1/500 or more)
  • Burst mode for birds in flight
  • Patience, lots of patience
