Introduction to Torres del Paine

Torres del Paine National Park is, without a doubt, the most emblematic destination in Chilean Patagonia. With its imposing granite towers, ancient glaciers, and turquoise lakes, this place attracts travelers from all over the world.

How to Get There from Punta Arenas

The route from Punta Arenas to Torres del Paine is approximately 312 kilometers and takes between 4 and 5 hours of driving. The road is in good condition, although the last stretch is gravel.

Recommended route:

  1. Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales (247 km, ~3 hours) - Paved road
  2. Puerto Natales to Torres del Paine (65 km, ~1.5 hours) - Mostly gravel

Recommended Vehicle

For this route, we recommend a 4x4 truck. Although it's possible to arrive with a standard vehicle in summer, a 4x4 will give you:

  • Greater safety on gravel roads
  • Better capacity to cross fords
  • More space for luggage
  • Traction in case of bad weather

What to Bring

  • Enough fuel (last gas station in Puerto Natales)
  • Food and water
  • Warm clothing (weather changes rapidly)
  • Camera
  • Cash for park entrance

Park Entrances

The park has two main access points:

  • Laguna Amarga (north access)
  • Lago Sarmiento (south access)

We recommend booking your entrance in advance on the CONAF website, especially in high season (October to April).

Recommended Circuits

One day:

  • Torres viewpoint (base)
  • Salto Grande
  • Lake Pehoé

Two days:

  • Add: Grey Glacier, Grey Lake
  • Cuernos del Paine viewpoint

Safety Tips

  1. Respect speed limits on gravel roads (maximum 60 km/h)
  2. Keep your distance from other vehicles to avoid rocks
  3. Don't go off the marked road
  4. Carry a spare tire and basic tool kit
  5. Check the weather before leaving

Accommodation

You can stay inside the park (hotels, refuges, camping) or in Puerto Natales, which has more options and more affordable prices.

Best Time to Visit

  • October to April: Best weather, longer days
  • December to February: High season, more tourists
